Thumbs down Newbie, Ati Mobility Trouble

Hi there folks!
Was hoping to get into this Linux stuff but having touble at the moment. This is my first install of Mandrake 9.2 on my Dell C800 laptop. It has an ATI mobility 128 graphics card. The install went fine, but when I boot it keeps going into XFdrake cause of my video probs aparently. When I choose the right card (it chooses the right one automatically) and do a test it just comes up with (EE) unable to determine the screen layout.

Have tried loads of combinations, but no luck. What can I do. Am totally new to it, so be simple!
Thanks in advance

try to set up a vesa video card and a vesa monitor, wich works fine for my ATI cards (ati rage mobility L pro and ati rage mobility P/M pro)... not the most beautiful solution I think, but at least it works (for me)

Dell C800 ATI Video

I have the same problem. A Dell C800 running ATi Mobility 128. I have had someone with a lot more knowledge than me look at it and found that changing the xserver values from the command line for different values in the LCD display did not work.

He suggested installling Fedora core 2, as i had core 1. Has anyone got Fedora Core 2 working on a Dell C800 ATi Mobility 128 "out of the box" i.e accept defaults etc. I do not yet have the knowledge to go command line.

As an interesting aside SUSE 9.1 fires up the display but the middle of the screen has a distortion down it at 800x600. Switch to a lower resolution and it disappears. The display is fine. Windows can drive it at 1600x1200 no problems. I have enrolled on a nightschool course and the tutor could not fix this in the ten or so mins he had. i.e., the problem is not me!!

I appreciate that many people will want to help. Bear with me on this as i know you need me to paste the log file and settings. Square 1. tell me like i am a five year old how to get the log file from where it is generated to this forum. The laptop is triple boot win98,win2k,fedora core 1
