newbie

I need to download Linux to my laptop so I can practice. How do I go about
doing this?

Thanks!

Well, you can download ISO images of your distro of choice from the website concerned.

Thereafter you can burn this to DVD and reboot/install your machine. Take into account that you need to be careful to backup your existing data or you'll lose it.

An alternative is to use a Live CD (most of the bigger distro's have this - Ubuntu, Fedora etc) which doesn't re-install your machine; but allows you to boot up the OS via the DVD. Again, you can get the relevant ISO image from the distro's website.

Welcome to LQ!!

Please use descriptive thread titles. You can change the title by clicking on "edit" and then going to the advanced mode.

Go to http://distrowatch.com and pick anything in the top 10 on their "hit list". Go to the website for the distro you choose and follow the instructions.

Try these little guides to choosing a distro:

I'd go for the live CD to start with.
