Hey all the name is Dan and I'm from Australia and new to linux. I've had Suse Novell Enterprise Linux 10.1 installed on my computer with Windows XP on my other hdd for a few months. I love the ease of use and the features of Suse/Novell 10, it has never crashed.

The only problem is I can't find any codes to get mp3s to run in amrok or the dvd to work. I know where the sites are but how do you actually install they don't use RPM (I know Fedora use, was a big fan of that, and then I lost interest and found Suse 10.)

Also I have installed SoundKonverter 0.2 rc2 . The issue i have with this is that it wont convert any of mp3s to oggs at all. It sits there for an hour and does nothing.
Have i installed it wrong? I take it SounKonverter is in beta stages and there is no gurantees in working right?

In the Amarok Settings menu, select 'configure amarok', engine. See if there is a sound engine selected (choose one if not set).

If that doesn't work, try starting Amarok from the command line, and watch for error messages as a means of debugging the problem.

I'm not acquainted with SoundKonverter. I use grip to rip cds or convert from one format to another. In the grip configurations, you can specify the input file format (mp3) and the output format (ogg).

Remember that both mp3 and ogg are lossy formats. Converting from one to another may not produce acceptable results. I find it better to rip from wav to ogg, or wav to mp3, but not mp3 to ogg or vice versa.

It isn't a problem with the software, it is that you cannot play mp3 by default, as it is a codec that is privately owned.

The solution is simple however. You just have to follow the instructions on this website to add certain repositories to your yast sources, and then install some software which will provide the ability to play mp3s under amarok or any other software.
