Hello people i currently use windows *everyone hisses* and want to move over to linux i tryed installing mandrake 7.1 and had a play around only to find i couldent access my a drive or cd rom  i dident have access rights ? ime downloading mandrake 8.2 at the moment and am hopeing it will be a little easier can anyone help with the access rights thing ? also is there a way to take my msn messanger with me ??? last of all is there anything else i should think about before moveing to linux >>?<< Thanks Ophielle :jawa: |
I think MDK 8.2 is easier than RH 7.1. One thing you should know is that there is no automatic mounting in this release, but it can be easily done.

Yeah go with Mandrake 8.2, its much more refined for the newbie user.

As for msn, gaim and gabber are the solutions.

And as far as access rights go, in Linux it's normal behaviour that no one but root can mount/unmount CDs and floppies drives; it's an adminisration/security thing. Access rights can be changed by changing permissions (for directories and files) and by passing certain options to the mounting commands in /etc/fstab (for filesytems, CDs, floppies, Zip drives, etc.). Read the man pages for mount and chmod/chgrp once you get everything installed.
