newbe try'n to install wine...help

i have been a long time windows user and have been tinkering with redhat 9 for the last few months. i have been teach'n my self as much as i can, and probabily (sp?) doing as well as someone with no linux experience can do. i have tried the instructions in the readme file that accoumpanied the DL and i am getting nowhere. this is what happens

checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
[bburnham@localhost wine-20020710]$

i have tried to install the c not c++ compilers but i am told that they are already installed.

i know that i should search the forum before posting anything, but all the posts that i come accross that have the same problem, the suggestions are greek to me. can somebody have pitty on me and some patience also

thanks to ANYBODY that can or tries to help!!!!!

ben

Welcome to LQ!!

I can't say exactly what to do to get wine to work with RH 9.0 since I use 8.0. But.... may I suggest you use a newer version of wine??? The one you're using was released July 10, 2002.

That may solve some problems for you.

I often wonder why when someone installs gnu/linux, the first thing they want to do is install wine.

Well.. if the rpm for Red Hat 9.0 installed successfully then try running this form the command prompt.

bash2.05$/mywinedirectory/wine notepad.exe

If wine is working correctly you shoud get MS Notepad
