Newb Internet very slow on Ubuntu 12.04

hello there first time poster :-)
On my box I was previously using Fedora 17 but for other reasons I decided to switch to ubuntu 12.04 I am really liking it so far but for some reason my download speed is sub par at best. On fedora I was getting anywhere from 1.5 to 3 mbs a sec, which for me I was loving.

Now on ubuntu it seems like im getting capped out at 500kb ..ive read other forum posts and have disabled ip6 through network manager but still no improvements.

does anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance!

If it's straight Ubuntu 12.04 (vs. Kubuntu, Lubuntu or Xubuntu), try disabling the Ubuntu One and deja-dup services (unless you really want those). Of course, that might disable Ubuntu's software market (I don't know, I don't use that), but you can install synaptic, which is arguably a better package manager. I have heard people complaining about Ubuntu One hogging bandwidth somewhat severely.

Another thing to try is disabling IPv6 support (if you're not using that) .

the following didnt work its still capping out at 500kb ...could it be a driver issue?
