New Window issues Minta Cinnamon

Hi there! From absolute Newbie loving Linux (Mint Cinnamon)
One issue - sometimes run into a glitch: when starting new apps, windows do not appear properly; button appears in the taskbar, but the window does not appear. This affects all windows, can't even open terminal and just have to power off at that point... Was that an installation issue (installed off a DVD from OSDisk)? Or am I missing something basic? Cheers!

So you're seeing some sort of lockup is what this sounds like. Correct?

Can you do CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a system terminal? Then from there, can you kill the process you just tried to start? Or do you need help with how to examine your system and then kill the process?

Once this is done, you can then his CTRL-ALT-F8 to get back to your desktop and then see if it is no longer locked up.

The next step would be to determine what applications are the problem. For instance if it is always one, or a certain few ones which do this, or if it is random.

Thank you, rtmistler
It seems like, all of a sudden, all windows start behaving like that. Here's what happens (after working fine for a while doing other things):
Click on firefox (or other app) icon on taskbar to open app- button appears in taskbar, bit no window - click on button, window appears, BUT the name Firefox is in [] in the taskbar button - actual firefox window is not responding to any clickong - click on taskbar button again, window disappears, and name on button is no longer in [] - click again on button, nothing happens - try to open any other application or logout window, or even going Alt-Ctrl-Del to get logout window - windows all behave the same way...
One thing I noticed - in the taskbar below faint shadow-like images that look like the top parts of the windows I tried opening; greyish ghosty looking

What hardware are you running it on? Mint is Heavy so on older systems it can lockup/freeze easily, use you system monitor to see if it is swapping.

Also does a reboot help?

Still unsure if you can open a system console and debug this using things like, ps, or top.

Hearing about the problem helps, but what we seem to be hearing are all the symptoms and no information about normal operation, or how frequently this occurs.

As MillJ says, system specifications would help here.

Thanks, everyone. Like someone said, this is probably a hardware issue. This is an old PC that used to have issues anyway ... I might install Lite on it later, see if it is less taxing for it ...
