Question New Ubuntu PC

Hi All.

I'm in the planning stages of building my own PC (second time) and am considering installing Ubuntu 9.04 as the OS instead of Windows XP which I have on my current machine. I have heard that there can be problems with compatibility of Linux OSs with major components such as motherboards, graphics and sound cards etc. and software which is designed to run under Windows.

Firstly I would like to ask how big a problem this is and if anybody knows of an information source, perhaps a website which can advise on suitability of major components etc.

Many thanks.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

That's a fairly general question, and the short answer is that some Linux distros do have some problems with some hardware. In a lot of cases there's an easy fix, in most, a different distro will work flawlessly. With nearly all, if not all distros, you get a LiveCD with installer, so you can test all your hardware before installing.

New Ubuntu PC

Thanks Bill for your response. I'm sorry not to have thanked you sooner, however, I've been away for a few days and with not a PC in sight.

I tried out a live CD and checked out the hardware on my current PC and it gave everything the thumbs up. So at least I know these various components are OK.
