New ubuntu nightmares.
So recently ( yesterday) My fiance managed to mangle his ubuntu 10.10. ( i'm a bad influence) So he re-installed with the new version which is 11.10 if I am not mistakes.. it looks like MAC.. Why? I would not know and that rant would waste space. We are planning to down grade him later when I see him ( a few months) but until then we need help with this "new OS" Currently nothing works the same as we are use to and trying to install and run IMVU on wine is a no go. In fact nothing seems to stay open for more than 2 minutes before closing itself out or freezing.
What help am I asking for? At this moment the package you connect to wine for running windows programs and a .dll for IMVU. I am not sure anyone can even help but hey.. why not? Ubuntu 11.10 . Alienware pc. do not have pc specs in front of me but had enough ram and things...and swap memory and blah blah. Thanks, A frustrated Kaji D: |
That wonderful new interface is the new Unity interface with Gnome 3. If you want a more traditional desktop, you'll have to go to Xubuntu and use the Xfce desktop, or try out the latest Linux Mint which has a more usable interface with Gnome 3.(Called Cinnamon)
Xfce is very usable and similar to Gnome 2 in many ways, so that's what I would recommend. |
Also note that you don't need to reinstall to get a different desktop. To get Xfce, just install the "xfce4" pacakge and then you should be able to choose it when you log in.

wasn't the package "gnome-desktop-environment" the package wich gives you the look and feel of the previous gnome interface?

Yes there was a way to install Gnome 2 in the latest Ubuntu release it only works on 11.10 though
