New Ubuntu FF installed - no terminal window?

How do I open a terminal window from ubuntu desktop?
I select Applications/Accessories/Terminal, and it prompts for a username and password, but then returns right back to the desktop without giving me a terminal window.

It shouldn't prompt for anything.
Try alt-f2 'gnome-terminal'

I'm up and running on PCLinuxOS now. There were too many problems with xubuntu. Sound/Printer/Terminal-window. So far PCLinuxOS installed and is running without a hitch.
