Dear Group:

I am thinking of expanding my limited horizons.I have been a windows/mac user for far too long and I would like to know how to best configure a new system with linux to run programs such as ardour and rosegarden .I would like to investigate fully the potential of these programs .As a musician/composer I am interested in the benefits of linux.from what I've read thus far. Stability and low latency are definitely benefits that I am definitely interested in. As one considering a great switch or alternatives to the commercially touted machines and enterprises I seek to brave new frontiers and thus free my mind from such constraints. I am seeking your knowledge and expertise to help me select the right application . Is ubuntu best to run programs like ardour? are there any special requirements for multi media programs ? audio/ video are some linux os better than others ? which are best for music and why?Why should I definitely use Linux over XP when recording music.Your help is extremely appreciated.

Ubuntu is currently my favorite distribution, and I do a lot of audio stuff. I do not recommend Ubuntu over XP for recording. My recommendation would be reaper by cockos as a daw. It runs almost equally well on linux, but not better than on XP, so there is no real reason to switch. You might come to like the modular nature of the linux sound architectures, daws and composition tools.
The only special requirement is the realtime kernel. You can get it via "sudo apt-get install linux-rt".
Or you can get the whole ubuntustudio-audio metapackage (a metapacke depends on various other packages - this one will install ardour, jack, rosegarden...) "sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio" - This will also install the realtime kernel.
