New to posting - the new Firefox is giving me problems. Emails don't work.

HI;

I haven't been using my Knoppix in a while and am trying to remember some of the methods of doing many of the things that I wasn't too good at in the first place.

I am having trouble with my emails not working properly due to having to up date Firefox.

I have tried: sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox, but it tells me that I don't a have a candidate, duh, what ever that means.

Any hints?

Hi: & Welcome to Linux Questions.-:)

You mentioned that when you run apt-get install firefox you get an error about not having a candidate.
Post the output in the terminal of the error message for us when you have time.

Doesn't Knoppix come with Ice Weasel?
Ice Weasel came with my distro and it runs well.

Hope that helps

Sorry but just haven't had the time to get back to my Firefox problem in Knoppix on the HD.- It was an older version of Knoppix about 5 years old. DOn't have the version handy.

Every thing was working fine when I last used it - I had no problems with my emails - but when I went back onto Knoppix and went to check my emails on 3 different sites I couldn't because of the update that I needed. I couldn't recall how to use my Knoppix and so I tinkered where and when I probably shouldn't have.

All three of my emails didn't work and they all requested that I up date my browser - which was Firefox - Ice weasel and the Firefox browser continued to work but not when I would go into my emails. Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail all stated that they would need to update Firefox.

When I can get back to it - (May be some time from now) I will try to send the terminal info requested - I think that I should have waited to post this SOS but didn't - Sorry.

Ray

This probably means that the package manager did not find a package in the repositories that is named mozilla-firefox. I don't know knoppix, but it's debian based so it probably uses iceweasel (as Ztcoracat said), which is the Debian version of firefox. (It's really the same browser with a bit of rebranding)

So you could try
Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install iceweasel

This is assuming that you want to *install* this package. From what you are writing you already have it, and want to upgrade it. But before giving you directions on this it would be better if you gave us some additional information. How old is your knoppix? It may be too old to get a reasonable recent version from the repositories. You may actually want to move to a newer release altogether...

Another thing: It's a bit confusing that you are speaking of firefox (webbrowser) in the context of email. Unless you only want to access your email through webmail?

What is the output of:
Code:

uname -a

Iceweasel vs FF

Sorry but I am not using Knoppix at this time -

Yes, I was using ice weasel but it was FF that demanded an update - I did update iceweasel but still can not get emails apparently due to FF telling me to update it. Heck I couldn't even remember how to do that... LOL

When I get back to Knoppix I will try sharing the terminal data -

Also, will try "uname -a" - for what it's worth.

Thank you all for at least trying to get me back up and running.

But I must admit that I seem to be getting dumber and dumber as age creeps up on me.

Windows has stunted my mental growth. ; ?)

Hmm, again, I have never used Knoppix, but I am not sure this makes sense. If you have an iceweasel install on your system you should be able to use it irrespective of any firefox installs that you may or may not have, and irrespective of their version. If you go to a website using iceweasel and it tells you to update firefox it probably really means your iceweasel install.

That would be good, because at this point we can only guess... The terminal commands that have been requested would be helpful to diagnose your problems more accurately.
Also it would be helpful if you posted the exact error messages you are getting, and what exactly you did to trigger them.
E.g. when you say "FF telling me to update it" I am wondering: Is this really FF talking to you while you are using iceweasel?!? Does not makes sense. Is the website giving you a message? Or is this actually about add-ons / plugins that are asking to be updated?
If you are unsure you could also post screenshots of the message dialogs you are getting...

"uname -a" will provide info on your installed system / version to see how outdated it is.

Hehe, yes, that's what windows does... Good that you are coming back to the Linux side :-)

Terminal request ed

knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ sudo apt-get install google

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package google
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox

Package mozilla-firefox is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
iceweasel

E: Package 'mozilla-firefox' has no installation candidate

Knoppix version 6.2 to answer another question.

Thanks guys, I also now have gmail working but hotmail and yahoo mail are still defunked and requesting an up date.
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$

Ztcoracat 02-07-2014 05:36 PM

It appears that Knoppix 6.2 is not longer supported.
That would explain a lot of the trouble your having--

The current version of Knoppix is 7.2.0:-
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=knoppix

Your best bet at this point would be to perform a complete fresh install of this distribution.

Agree with what Ztcoracat says but want to throw in one little thought:

If you're going to do a fresh install anyhow and are not fixed on Knoppix you may want to give Linux Mint a try. It's Ubuntu based, which really means it's Debian based, so terminal commands will feel familiar. But it comes with a Desktop Environment which I think is reasonably easy to use. You have an application called Software Center which allows you to install software without having to use the command line. (It's a bit slower than command line though)
I installed it on the computers of my wife, my sister in law and my mother. None of them are quite technical but they all find it straight forward and easy to use.

Problem kinda solved. LOL

Thanks, all of you for the help.

I did think that this version might be a little old. LOL

As a matter of fact - I received the new version of 7.2 two or three days ago.

Will try installing it some time soon.

I think that I should start using it again - and try reviving some of my dead brain cells.
