New to Mandrake, Help Needed!

Hi!

I just migrate from RedHat 9 to Mandrake 9.2..
I got a great first impression of Mandrake 9.2. My printer, my scanner, and importantly my Radeon card which RedHat couldn't detect, is now detected.

Anyway, a lot of things are different compared to RedHat I hope you guys can help.

1. Does Mandrake support NTFS? I read somewhere that it does...Do I need to install additional driver? I had to with RedHat...

2. How do I get apt and synaptic for Mandrake? Or maybe their alternatives?

iLLuSionZ 11-15-2003 05:42 AM

you like it more than redhat?

sry i have no answers for you... look for the ntfs drivers at sourceforge

i had soo many problems with redhat and my mandrake 9.2 just finished... im excited to instal it morrow... its 7 am now and i should go to bed lol

phi_rad 11-15-2003 05:52 AM

Yeah, I do like it more than RedHat...But I might change my opinion later on...I have just used it for an hour

Anyway, NTFS is indeed supported...Just check /mnt/win...But I still dunno whether I can write file onto it.

Good luck with your installation.

Answer: Yeah, i think all linux distros support NTFS but you need to compile it into the kernel in order to detect ntfs partitions

2. How do I get apt and synaptic for Mandrake? Or maybe their alternatives?

Answer: From what i recall Mandrake has some built-in packagde handler which can be used but I also think that apt could beinstalled into the system; though in my opinion I would recommend to use the package handler that came with Mandrake

Note: I dont know if this is he correct answers as I am also learning linux and may consider myself to be a n00b so keep that in mind :-) I hope you get it solved!

Cheers!

I'm still learning as you are... In fact, just started using Linux 1 month ago...
I tried the package manager that comes with Mandrake. I wanted to add xine, xmms, and mozilla and I ended up uninstalling every other software. Silly me.

comawhite 11-15-2003 06:00 AM

My suggestions to you would be to install everything you want manually, that seems to work better for me, although it is many times sweet to have the apt-get in debian but on the other hand i like to do it manually, then i learn at the same time also :-)

phi_rad,
A seemingly frequent problem wity 9.2 is the "dissapearing menus".
That may have happened to you instead of accidentally uninstalling all other programs.

I seem to have better luck installing one app at a time when using the package manager.
I like the Idea of using the command line. But havent tried it myself yet.

Okay, here are some more problems I met:

1. Couldn't install flash plugin for Mozilla 1.4. I installed it without any problem with my RedHat 9 and Mozilla 1.2.1

2. Everytime I made a boot disk, there was always an error message

3. Gaim provided can't login to MSN and Yahoo...

4. Mozilla sometimes became very slow.

Anyone has anything to say about those problems?

Anyway, can I update the Gaim with Gaim 0.72 for MDK 9.1? And where can I find the dependency files?
I could find them easier back then with RedHat

iLLuSionZ 11-15-2003 12:47 PM

yeah you can update it.. you have to, to be able to sign on.. the link is in one of my threads on page 2 or 3.

phi_rad 11-15-2003 01:02 PM

Which thread?

Anyway, I found other unusual thing, I couldn't read any on my zip disk..Everytime I mount it, the Konqueror went hang...

phi_rad,
I hope the pros around here can help you.
For grins I tried to install flash player and make a boot disk today, both for the first time.
I got a "out of space " error while trying to make a boot disk and flash playing does not seem to work for me with mozilla.

phi_rad,
Don't know if this will help you or not but I wound up getting flashplaying working on my box.
I tried 10 or 12 times till I hit on this combo that worked for me.

I downloaded marcomedia flashplayer from here: http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/
then I installed the only libstd (other than devel) that I could find with package manager: libstdc++2.10-2.96-083mdk

I still hope the pros can help you out but in the mean time this might give you something to try.

Check out the following post for Boot Floppy Instructions on Mandrake 9.2

phi_rad,
Before I saw the above post, I started monkeying around and started getting what appear to be good boot disk.
It may be hardware(Idont think so) or package installation specific or who knows (certainly not me) but this is what worked for me.
In (gui) Mandrake Control Center-Hardware-HardDrake I selected my floppy (fd0) and then the "run config tool" button at the bottom of panel.
In the panel it opened I selected "Options". In the next panel that opened I selected only the "supermount" choice, and deselected every thing else.
I ok'd my way out and when prompted chose "save to fstab".

Like I said, don't ask me , but maby worth a shot - don't think you could tear anything up to bad even if it doesn't work for you.

phi_rad,
Having any luck?
I tried to get gaim going at the same time as kopete.
Kopete was easier for me to configure (as the newbie that I am) so I stuck with it.
I have kopete logging me on to msn and yahoo.
I know it isn't your 1st choice but kopete seems to be doing for me the two things you mentioned.
Of course there may be a reason you don't want to use kopete.

Also, while I was monkeying around with installing flashplayer it seems mozilla did act up a little and slow down at some web sites.
Now that flashplaying is working mozilla is back to normal.
