New to linux - working with ubuntu 7.10 - have some questions
 

Hello everyone,
My name is Niv, and as you can probably gather, I'm a linux 'virgin'.
I started today, and I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.

My first problem is I can't write in hebrew.
I tried using the language selector, but I get a message saying that it isn't completely installed.

I tried every package that seemed appropriate, but to no avail.
I really need it, as it's the end of the semester, and I've got LOTS of tests.

My second problem is that I try to install VLC media player, it seems to be dependent on some packages that aren't on my list (I tried updating several times).

My last question: any other packages\ updates\ utilities that you recommend?

I got a bit lost in Ubuntu's website, and I was wondering if any of you kind people could help me...

Yeah, Ubuntu forums are pretty bad most times. However I don't use Ubuntu since a lot of time ago and will never return.

Regarding your question, you should tell what specific message you get in what application for being able to help you.

Many people loves VLC though the better and stable player for GNU/Linux is mplayer without any doubts. You could install a graphical interface ie. gnome-mplayer or gmplayer whomsoever names it for Ubuntu.

A good setup counts on Abiword or OpenOffice for writing letters. Presentations are only possible in OpenOffice as far as I know (mostly for Power P. compatibility...). Apart from OOffice there is the great gnumeric for excel alike sheets.
There are Gnucash, Grisby and others (personal and professional finances)
A very, very good video and audio player, mplayer. There is Totem too for the new.

And you should do use SYNAPTICS (the package installer) and search for descriptions of anything else you do need.

You can open an application called synaptic (problem within the system menu) and then edit the software repositories your computer accesses. There are probably some repositories like ubuntu universe that you can check off to include. This may clear up the dependency problems you have, as those dependencies will now be in a repository you can access.

Here is a "hebrew"ized remastering of ubuntu. Since it is based on the recent 7.10 release, you can probably boot it in live-evalution CD mode if you don't want to overwrite your current ubuntu installation. That way, you can do all your assignments using the hebrew support. You should also be able to access your hard drive while using the live-evaluation CD if you go to your equivalent of "my computer" and right click or something to enable hard drive access by the live-evaluation CD. You can surf, compose stuff, and print using the live-evaluation CD. You can also access any USB thumb drives you have to store and retrieve information.

I am also a Linux Virgin...well i'm being broke in:)
I ran into a few issues as was expected..Solved most of them with a lot of help from here,and extreme patience...
I researched and decided to go with Xbuntu.I found that it installed easily,had everything in order,and is great for my older PC..For myself being a beginner it suits my needs very well..Give it a test drive.

Beyond that, www.google.com/linux is your friend for finding answers to Linux-related questions. It took me all of five seconds to find that howto and read enough of it to know it's probably what you need to know.
