New to Linux transitioning from a PowerBook G4 looking for Distro

Hi there to everyone...
I'm trying to learn how to use Linux..
Have an Old PowerBook G4 I'm trying to relive. It used to run on
10.4.11 Mac OSX. It has a Processor 1.5 Ghz PowerPcG4 and a
Memory 1.5GB DDR SDRAM..
Which distro do you recommend? Thank you for reading me..
Best!!

I'm actually not aware of any distro's that still have current releases for ppc architecture. ppc64el, yes, but not so much the standard PPC architecture of the old powermacs. Debian 8 still has SOME support and was the last version of it that supported PowerPC.

If you're just looking for a supported OS, FreeBSD from what I understand still actively supports PowerPC.

OpenBSD supports PPC, too.

Looks like BSD is a good choice for users of classic PPC Mac's, then...

Thank you....Needless to say I'm new to all this..
Will this distro be learning friendly?

Timothy Miller 03-29-2020 07:35 PM

learning friendly as in easy to learn? Or learning friendly as in stays out of the way so you can properly learn it?

If the first I'd hazard to say probably not. Been a while since I used either of those so I may be totally off, but they were never focused on being easy to use that I remember. If you mean the 2nd, most definitely.

BSD is similar to, but different than Linux. As to being learning friendly your challenge will be to get it installed on a ppc cpu. If you can do that, working with the operating system will be a breeze.

Check this link: https://www.debian.org/ports/powerpc/inst/install to put Debian(a Linux Distribution) on your old Mac.

great...
want to gather a few more opinions to make a choice..
any other suggestions you might have will be more than welcome...
BTW thanks for taking the time to answer these threads..

The problem with Debian is the last version of Debian that supported PPC was Debian 8 (we are currently on Debian 10). So the applications will be downright ARCHAIC.

Yes that's true, Debian 8 was some time ago, but I assumed this was a learning exercise for the OP. End of life is June 30 so until then he will still have security updates. Also installing BSD on his hardware is not exactly newbie friendly.

sunnyskies77 03-29-2020 08:03 PM

Don't mind learning...
I would just like it to last once I install it..

Any Opinions on Lubuntu 16.04

a friend of mine was just telling me about trying
a Live version of Lubuntu 16.04

What do you think? would this be viable? or useful?

That would be a good option. Here's a Distrowatch search for distros and BSDs that support PowerPC:

going to try Lubuntu 16.04 live version
