Thumbs up New to Linux: Setting up an icarus verilog Hardware Description Language

Hi, I´m certainly looking for a best way to make simulating circuits by a verilog, but I got stucked into this new subject after installing steve-icarus verilog into my Linux mint OS.

My first question would be: how can I use it, furthermore, how can I run it and implement this new language, what kind of tool should I use in order to code a better simulation and either debbug and run it.

Main source: http://iverilog.icarus.com/

Many thanks.

In Electronic design, I presume?

I've done this with vhdl. It's either/or in some cases, but you are best off choosing the chip imho and installing the manufacturer software for that. I tried many and ran into problems. I found several half-assed verilog implementations out there, but good ones may exist also. I just didn't find one.

I ended up with Altera's Quartus running in a windows vista VM under virtualbox, after burning through the linux vhdl software offerings one by one. Some work in a particular distro, but not Slackware. Even then updates are less frequent and software is low budget stuff in linux.

If you don't use manufacturer software, planning the pinout or tracing an issue becomes a nightmare.
