New to linux. Mandrake 9.1. ATI 9800. Can't get drivers installed

Hello. I'm new to Linux and was told the latest version of Mandrake would be a good one for me to start on.

So I got it installed a few hours ago but I'm unable to install the video drivers. I was told by people on another message board I post on that video drivers were why it was hanging in a command propmt when I booted into Mandrake.

He told me to burn fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm from ATI.com's driver section to a cd then when I'm in the command prompt type "mnt/cdrom rpm -i -- force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm"

I've done that and get a file/dir/command (can't remember exactly) not found message.

I was also told to try "mount cdrom" then try the afore mentioned command. No luck there either.

My system is as follows.

2.4C@3.0GHz
512mb Mushkin PC3500
Asus P4P800
Sapphire 9800np
Liteon 48x24x48 CD-RW
Norcent 16x dvd-rom

Thanks for any insight.

to mount a cdrom try
"mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom"
then
"cd /mnt/cdrom"
then
"rpm -i -- force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm"
to install the drivers, and if this deosn't work try
"urpmi force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm" instead of the above command

It just keeps giving me a "file/dir not found" message.

I find the command line kinda odd though. Might by my total inexperence with linux.

Command lines shows as follows

[user @h24-83-161-10 user]$

I put user as I don't feel like putting in my actual user name.

Is it possible I messed up the installation? I know it's pretty straight foward but there are a few options that I left unchecked that perhaps should be checked.

If there's anything anyone needs to better understand this problem just ask and I'll accomodate you the best I can.

Sorry, haven't used an .rpm distro in awhile but there is a readme on ATI's website where you download the drivers. Located on their drivers page.. I think it says "instructions".

There are directions there for using .rpms to install the drivers. I think it is rpm -Uvh fglrx....

You should not have to mount the drive. Just type cd /mnt/cdrom and then rpm -i --force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm .
Why did you burn it to a cd in the first place? I think that is a superfluous measure. Anyway, that should run the rpm, but make sure you have the kernel source installed. You can do this by downloading it from the madrake install cds. Make sure you get the correct kernel source, or the make.sh script won't be able to make the kernel module.

(I'm not sure about this, but you may have to be root to do this. Just type su root to become root.)
