Have you seen any web pages that tell how one might use linux as a game server?

What are the specs of this system?

If you download the Ubuntu install disc for the server version (http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/) and burn it to a CD it should start automatically when you start the machine. If that is not the case you may have to correct the boot order in the BIOS of that machine, so that it starts from CD.
