New to Linux and the Forum
 

I am comtemplating setting up a linux web server but don't much about it. I have supported other systems for over ten years but have not had an encounter with Linux. I have heard that linux web servers are the way to go so what are the advantages to going with Linux and in particular Red Hat Enterprise verus the other guy? Also what is the most current server version of a linux/Red Hat Server?

"..is the way to go.." well, it can or cannot. It depends. If you have already paid for an expensive MS IIS Server, don't waste the money by throwing it out of the window. If you're working with these things (as in "production environment"), don't just switch to Linux in one night; instead, get a spare server for trying these things out. The web server for Linux is often Apache, which is for Windows also, so that's not a big change. There are alternatives, that are lighter, but I believe Apache is still the most popular choice. Free for Windows also, I think.

Advantages: learn new, don't pay that much, do things yourself
Disadvantages: have to learn more, have to do things yourself (even if you did pay for tech support), problematic situations because you will get Windows users that aren't "compatible" with the rest of your environment

Shortly said: it's not a wonderland. But definitely worth a try; actually it's very difficult if not impossible to tell exactly what is good or bad in using Linux as your server, you'll just have to try it yourself.
