What distribution are you using?

Do you know about www.geexbox.org?
This is probably not what you want but it is handy to know it exists. Anyway, what kind of video are you trying to watch (dvd, divx, mpeg?) on which distro? |

follow that link. i just did exactly what you were asking about. Debian 4 stable is what i chose for my distro. i added the repository for debian-multimedia in my sources.list, added a few things and poof im up and running. if you want help with debian please feel free to ask and ill be more then happy to try to help. |
just a heads up that due to restrictions in patents, support for things like DVD's and in some cases mp3 playback requires extra packages to be installed. for DVD playback in totem, you need to install the libdvdread and the libdvdcss packages. This is for ubuntu and debian, I imagine its very similar for Fedora and other distros. It has been a few years since I watched a DVD in fedora.

Mani, it's important to know what distro of linux you are running. Each has it's own quarks.
but the applications that will play videos are, mplayer totem kaffeine you will most likely have to install some codecs as well. I would search for "video codecs" in your distribution forum. I personally prefer mplayer, but that's my preference. Les |
