New to Linux

Hi, I am trying to remove WinXP Pro on my Dell D600 and install a copy of Linux on my laptop. I wasn't sure which version was the right one for a Home user. Please guide me through and help me get going. Friends suggested I download Redhat.

i know this is the laptop forum but for that question you are muich more likly to get a better answer in the newbie forum

Personally i would recomend either suse or fedora as a start system for a newbie as they are easy to use

the only freely downladable versions of red hat are way out of date!

I agree with dasy2k1, but since you are here -

There are many good distros around. As to which one might work well with your laptop, I would try some live distros, find the one you like - and install it. For $15 - $20 you can get maybe 6 or 7 distros to try. I use a place called http://www.budgetlinuxcds.com - very reliable. (no affiliation) When you want to know about a distro - start at http://distrowatch.com/

I have found both Kubuntu and Knoppix to be easy starting places. They are both available as live cds - ie you can boot from the CD. Your windows partition will be available and you can get a feeling for what a modern Linux system looks like.

Have fun

Ubuntu, SimplyMepis, or SuSE are all pretty good choices for a first distro.
