I am also new to this forum and to Linux. I am curious to know if you have Linux up and running yet? I am planning to use the DVD included with the 9th edition Linux for dummies to get started. I'm using a refurbished lease computer I found on Amazon. This seemed a lot easier that trying to partition my hard drive on my windows laptop. Good luck, Chuck
Welcome ja & Chuck! I too am curious about PC/OSes used (&goals).
Mine is a poor ol' netbook; I'm afraid to disturb XP (cuz my XPcd &ext. dvd drive got stolen),
so I use VirtualBox to try small-medium .iso 's (from DistroWatch). Unfortunately 1024x600;
I rarely 'do' GUIs (X11/Xorg) cuz I'm interested in just booting ...[thru/up-to-a] shell.
I had success with NuTyX: put grub on separate .vdi, w/only 12 i386pc .mod for linux&normal
My next 'goal' is: making a minimal initrd [or no! initrd]. For NO initrd, I suspect I'll need to
learn to build a kernel (goal: *abs min* config for Atom N270, VBox video&e1000)
