New to Linux
 

Hi im thinking to install Linux but i dont know which.Debian or Ubuntu?Which is fast and more secure?Also i want to install Half life 2 non steam version with Source sdk non steam (I know cracked version but i will buy it soon just testing)and i was wondering can i install them?

Debian would be my recommendation.

Not fully current but my belief is that for the non steam you'd need to install Wine to run Windows applications under Linux. Otherwise the steam variation can run on many of the newest distributions. You can check for that by booting Linux as a Live distribution. That's where you grab the install ISO file and place it on a DVD or USB stick and when it boots you try versus install.

Debian is a bit old-skool i.e. software packages lag several versions behind, but they are stable. So for a bit more modern up-to-date desktop you may want to go for ubuntu instead. Personally I would recommend to try one of the variations like xubuntu. I'm not sure exactly how the main Ubuntu distro is like today, but I've stopped using it ever since they introduced Unity. Such an annoyance. Linux Mint Cinnamon isn't a bad choice either.

The last post makes a good point. With different GUIs on offer, often very different, getting the one which suits you is a major aspect of making the right choice. Ubuntu offers Unity (make you computer look like a smart phone!), Gnome, Mate, and the semi-official variants Xubuntu, Kunbuntu, and Lubuntu. Debian offers Gnome. See them in screen shots via

You'll be very happy with debian.
You can also install different Desktops & additional software.
The most important thing is that it uses less resources than ubuntu.

If you want to game Windows 7 is your best bet. Wine emulation is very slow. Windows video drivers are more robust for gaming than Linux. Manufacturers build drivers for purchased OS like Microsoft. They are robust. Linux is free and the drivers are not always great for gaming.

If you search for half-life, you will see that the retail version 2 is listed a a "platinum program": one which runs perfectly. There are also instructions on installation.

Wine is not an emulator and does not slow down programs: a few programs actually run faster than they do under Windows!

Half life 2 is Linux ported and is a Linux game. So instead of insulting the OP (twice) for asking a question, just help them.
Anyways, if you plan on buying it in the future, do you plan on buying the steam one? Unfortunately, the steam one is the only version available on Linux. Otherwise wine should work fine, especially if it is rated platinum.
