New set up help

I need to get my laptop set up with Ubuntu alone. At the moment my system has mounted it to windows vista.

I've downloaded and created a disk to do a fresh install after formatting the hard drive.

I need to put a snapshot up of the files on the disc to confirm all the files needed are on the disc. However I can't find the system settings that show where my dvd drive etc is, can someone tell me how to get into the system info that shows the laptop build?

Thanks

Not sure what you mean, can you clarify? Do you mean you burned a CD or DVD to do the install with?

If you downloaded an .iso file, it will be complete, if you check it first with md5sum check. You can find instructions on this check for windows here -->http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...sum_in_Windows

If the file is a .iso file, I don't know of a way to look at it. It is a packed file as far as I know.

If you burn the file to a DVD, it will boot. You may need to go into your BIOS and set the DVD drive as the first drive to boot from. The exact way to get in to the BIOS depends on the hardware, and firmware. Most systems are a hot key, try pressing F1 before the hard drive is accessed. You can always go to the manufacturers web site and find the hardware doc for your system. It will be in there. Or if all else fails, post the make and model here as a question, and someone may know the hot key combo.

The disc has been burnt from the iso file and contains a number of files approx 10.

I'd like to post an image of the files on the disc to confirm what i have is correct but i can't see how to go into the system details to view the disc drive and the disc in the machine.

Did you boot the system from the DVD? Did the system boot from windoze? The methods to display the files are different.

Did you do the md5sum check? If yes, then you have all the files on the .iso file you need. If not, that is how you confirm the integrity of the download.

Hopefully the image below shows a scereen shot of the contents of the disc. I'm hoping this is correct to load a fresh install on a blank hard drive.

I've tried booting from disc in the settings on my laptop but it doesn't work. I'm clearly doing something wrong.

I need to get rid of windows asap as it's inferiority is very frustrating.

If i need to type in commands etc please tell me the exact route as to where to type these commands as i'm a basic user with limited knowledge.

Thanks

I think contents of cd are alright. But it should boot properly on a computer. You have to change bios setting so that computer boots from cd. If ubuntu starts and works well there then you can proceed to work with cd on laptop.

Can you me more precise? Did you get an error message? If so, what was it? If not, did it boot straight to windows?

As I said, and rng said, you have to go into the BIOS and set the DVD drive as the first boot device. If you do not know how, post the exact make and model of laptop you have. That info can be found on most manufactures web sites in their supporting documentation.

it's a dell inspiron 1520 with windows vista as primary o/s, the ubuntu partition seems to be mounted on windows itself.

When i first turn on the laptop it goes to a menu that asks to decide which o/s to continue set up with and then it's a simple arrow up/down select.

I've set my bios like this:
1 cd/dvd drive
2 floppy diskette drive (even though it doesn't have one)
3 usb drive
4 hdd

When i was just trying it, the disk span and made the juddery reading noise but it then continued to jump to the hdd to boot as normal.

As soon as this glitch is sorted I hope to install it from the disk and make ubuntu my sole o/s that boots the laptop from the installation on hdd.

If you have the cd/dvd drive set as first boot device, and the CD/DVD did not boot, there is a problem with the burn. Either the download is bad, or the burn of the .iso is not good, or you have bad media.

If you still have the .iso file, run a md5sum check on the file to verify the .iso file downloaded is a good file.

See this link for instructions on how to do the md5sum check in windows.

Have you done an install with Wubi? This installs inside windows partitions.

Linux file systems generally are not mountable by windows. There is a windows driver ( I think ) to mount an ext2 partition, but that is it. The other thing you could have done is installed linux to a partition that is either fat32 or NTFS. Neither is recommended for a linux installation.
