Welcome aboard Gracy. Welcome to LQ!

I believe you should try to think about the things you like, things that inspires your enthusiasm (Open Source did for me). But for a suggestion, how about an open source bandwidth management program?

Bandwidth monitoring are out there in numbers. And there are few user-space bandwidth management tools around. And we have quite good network management tools. But there's no proper open source tool for banwidth management wich would stand up to commercial counterparts with GUIs, real time monitoring and dynamic rules, and etc. So why not think about a such, at least a start (maybe utilising HTB - Hierachical Token Bucket).

CensorNet is somewhat a starting point. There are a few more things in the Net. If you are interested they may come in handy. (However if everything moves as expected I might start a little project regarding this area next year)

This is one thing I could suggest.

IM profiling needs an effort.
Supposing you are at home or in the workplace. You sign on to your IM client, Jabber or otherwise. However, it is not a good idea that you sign on and are available to everyone on your contact list. Therefore, if it was possible to implement a structure, in which you can define contacts as belonging to Group A, Group B, Everybody, Home Work - that kind of thing. That would be a very useful integrating feature for IMs - and as this is a needed feature, that might give you some exposure when you go looking for work afterwards.

I will not, at this moment suggest anymore project options and confuse you. At least for now. But I'll tell more about BM.

This tldp howto is about a BM tool, and it contains some backgroung info about HTB. It is a replacement for the older system called CBQ. Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO also contains some info about queueing.
