New potential user with questions

Hello,
Volt here I am wondering about linux, I would like to give it a honest try, unlike the dozens of tries before(on slackware). I was wondering if there was a good distro to learn on that I can load on a USB hdd and no have to edit bios to boot, in other words use a Mini CD to boot with.

There are many LiveCD versions. I'm a n00b but I have played with Knoppix, ubuntu and DSL as liveCD's
