New Mandrake 9.1 Install, X paging for infinity after login
I just installed Mandrake 9.1 with XFree86 4.3. Everything works fine until I try to log on through X. On my first attempt, I am prompted to go through the display wizard. I have tried going through the wizard and skipping it. Either way, once it seems I have logged in, I get the KDE splash screen, then it goes away and the system just starts paging. I have left it for 45 minutes with no result. I can log in using the failsafe environment as well as straight console (by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F2). Is there any way to fix this?

Update:
I reinstalled and chose XFree86 3.3 as my X server and had the same problem. I am able to get into X by using the "startx --configuration" argument, but it uses the Mandrake window manager, not KDE. Could the KDE files on the Mandrake 9.1 CD be messed up? If I have one complaint about Linux and the desktop market, it is the installation and configuration. I have been toying with Linux since Red Hat 5.1, but have always had trouble with configurations. It was a joy to see my TV card detected and installed upon installation without having to load 3rd party drivers, but without KDE, it's of little use. Any help would be appreciated. |
