Unhappy New Linux Mint Install is FLICKERING

help me. please.

I just bought this: https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-...3ACyberpowerPC

(specs if you scroll down a little farther on that amazon page)

It came with Win 10, but I really didn't want Win 10. I decided to try Linux Mint (cinnamon 64bit). The install went well with no error messages. I used UNetbootin to convert a 16GB usb lego stick into a bootable drive. I booted from said lego stick while still in Windows 10 and I was able to get Linux Mint running just on the usb. THEN, I installed Mint full on.

It's flickering. Every time I move the mouse or click on anything the screen flickers. No tearing at all. Graphics look fine otherwise.

I am lost now, bc the only solution I can find is to switch from cinnamon to MATE. The problem there is that I do not know how to boot from a usb drive on Linux.

I'd rather keep the version I have and just get the screen to stop flickering, but I don't know why it's even happening.

Please, help me out. Also, I am BRAND NEW to Linux... so spell it out for me. Derp derp.

Hi & Welcome to LQ.

I'm not running Linux Mint at the moment but when I was; I remember there being a "Driver Manager".

Look through your menu for Driver Manager and open it. You should see something that will tell you weather or not you can install a driver for your graphics card. That may help with the flickering.

That's a nice pc-

no dice

Ok, I found driver manager. It ran a little auto update for the cache and then displayed a greyed out box. Says there are no proprietary drivers in use. I did another search to see if there were any solutions and I read this

'Mate and cinnamon are both available in Ubuntu and Ubuntu mate is an officially supported flavor of Ubuntu. Mint adds nothing of value that Ubuntu does not already have. Mint cannot be upgraded without reinstalling the OS, so you will be doing a lot of reinstalling.'

...So now I am downloading a copy of Ubuntu and considering just using that and hoping the flicker doesn't remain to be a problem.

p.s. yeah... it is. thank you!

*shrug?

I am not sure how to boot from a usb in Linux like I did from Windows.

If you can get us the output from
Code:
inxi -Gxx
and the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log if it exists and/or the file ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log if it exists we may find a clue to a fix that is easier than reinstalling Mint or replacing Mint with Ubuntu.

I don't know where you found that information but it is blatantly wrong. Mint's Update Manager and Software Manager are, for example, two highly-praised applications that Mint adds to the Ubuntu mix. In addition, you have been able to upgrade Mint for a long while now, and I have done so repeatedly.

Please be careful and check what you read on the web before believing it. There is a lot of rubbish out there.

what video 'card/chip' do you have that causes you such anguish? That is the thing I do not like. I try a live USB and everything works fine, so I install it then I run into issues that I have to fix. It just gives me the wtf feelings.

mod:
oh yeah, you're new at this. Don't let that shy you away from Linux.

I am thinking the video card drivers is this what you are thinking? when I used to use Linux all of the time many years ago on my old PC it would do the same thing and it ended up being a Driver or a driver setting problem but again it was years ago so I could be not remembering totally correctly.

elliepiper-

Since you have a AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU now all you need to do is find out if you have the AMDGPU Pro installed.

What is the output of:

Code:
dpkg -L amdgpu-pro
-------******-------******-------******-------******-------******-------******-------*******------
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-635

Thanks for all the help, guys! (or gals) Yeah, I am very new to this. And easily overwhelmed when I feel like a fish out of water. I ran that code you gave me, Ztcoracat.

'dpkg -L amdgpu-pro'

It says I do NOT have that installed. So, I am looking online now to see if I can download and install whatever that is. Hit me back if you have any more info.

Thanks for the help. I 'll let you guys know what happens!

p.s. as for the other person's opinion of linux and putting MATE on there instead and all that, I waited. I got a little reacty that night. lol Frustrating issue.

Ok, so basically, I just downloaded Radeon™ Software for Linux® Driver for Ubuntu 18.04.1 and extracted it. I have yet to install anything. They didn't have one that said AMD RX 580, and those that had AMD in them all had R9 something something. They did have one that said Radeon RX 580, so I went with that one. Did I get the right one?

It looks like I am supposed to put some code into the terminal and run it, but I see no instructions. The only two files that resemble the clicky executable files on windows are called amdgpu-install and amdgpu-pro-install. Neither of them do anything when I double click and select run or run in terminal.

Am I missing something?

There should be a ReadMe file or a Install file to explain how to install it:- OR it could be a '.run file' which isn't hard to run.

When you get a minute post the link where you downloaded the driver and I'll download it and look at it for you and tell you what to do next.

Cool. Ok, so here is where I got the driver: https://www.amd.com/en/support. I chose the driver for 'Radeon RX 580' to match my AMD Radeon RX 580 card. It has two install files, no run files that I can see. One is 'amdgpu-install' and the other is 'amdgpu-pro-install'. I have tried both of them. They each give a prompt that says I can run it in the terminal, display it, cancel it, or just 'run'. It says in smaller letter that it's an executable file. Both files react like this when double clicked. When I select run (and i tried run in terminal too), it just closes the prompt like it is gonna react and then does nothing... I have a good feeling that if I get this done the flicker will stop, lol. Halp?

p.s. sorry to use quote to reply. the quick post didn't wanna work.

I'm downloading the driver now. It's saying that it's going to take an hour to download:-

While your waiting for me to be able to download, look and read the install file; see if you read and make sense of the install file. Let me know what you think.
