Hi Treidel,

Go to www.ubuntu.com and click Get Ubuntu. This will download a large .iso file. Once the download is complete, use your favorite burning software to burn this .iso file to CD as a "CD image". Then, pop the CD in your laptop, turn it on, and it should boot into Live CD mode, allowing you to try Ubuntu with no change to your computer. Try it for a while, and if you like it, there is an Install icon on the desktop.

More detailed guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

To answer your second question, no anti-virus software is needed with Linux!

(edit) I just remembered that some Acer laptops don't have CD drives, if this is the case, your easiest option is to use an external USB CD drive. If that's not possible, you can also make a bootable USB flash drive that functions just like a Live CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick

You should use the install from a usb flash drive as snowpine suggested.

Linux doesn't really need an anitvirus. It is designed from the ground up to be a secure system. A virus would need root privileges to do any real damage. There are anti-rootkits that you can install and run periodically such as rkhunter. These are available through synaptic after you install ubuntu.

Acer 110 and ubuntu

The Acer aspire 110 only comes with 8gig as a drive and the Obuntu programme is at least 4gig when fully downloaded I am reasonably sure of this as I downloaded it in preparation for install on my desktop...I too own an aspire with Linpus and am typing this on it...I too am a newby and would like to install obuntu if it would fit.

Ubuntu will fit on an 8gb drive as your only operating system.

If you want to have Ubuntu and keep Linpus too, I would recommend installing Ubuntu to an 8gb (or larger) SDHC card. (Assuming the Acer is capable of booting from an SDHC card; most netbooks are.)

ignoring the ubuntu CD

first of all, tanx for the quick reply. second, for some reason the linpus completely ignores the Ubuntu installation CD, and contunue to upload.

I know that the CD is ok since it works on Windows.
Is there anything elses that i should do?
