New Kernel working badly why??
 

I have a redhat 8.0 distro and the current kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0 I just updated the Kernel to kernel 2.4.18-26.8.0..
And now every time I run linux it Crashes in about 5min..The screen freezes right up..
Why does this happen,I have the older kernel in grub as an option thats what I'm using right now(2.4.18-24.8.0)
But newer kernels are better for the system right?they make the hardware and systems more compatible,to run better right??So will this happen to any kernel I try to update even in the future.... :Pengy:

There may be somethng incompatible compiled into the kernel - you could start to learn a little more about LInux and compile your own version, or revert to the last Redhat one.

most likely the kernel is configured incorrectly in some way, why are you upgrading your kernel? unless something is wrong with your computer as is (not good enough hardware support or something) there isnt a great deal of benefit in upgrading your kernel. You might also try using a non-redhat kernel from www.kernel.org

on the contrary, it is always good to upgrade your kernel especially if you want to learn how to do it. One thing that will help is to not use up2date for kernel upgrades. Compile it yourself.

Also, make sure until your new kernel is working correctly that you have a copy of the last good working one.

there is little actual gain in performance, stability, or other, in fact it can slow your system down if you are not good at it but of course yes it is a good idea to know how to recompile/compile a kernel...my advise is if you arent using your system for anything important and arent worried about breaking it then download 2.4.20 and have a go, otherwise leave it as is (unless there is a hardware support problem)

oh yeah the only hardware prob I actually had was the soundcard not working,does the kernel affect that too??

Just a minute - can you check something? Run this command and post the output:

cat /proc/iomem > iomem.txt

and post the contents of the iomem.txt file?

yes we should be able to help you with your sound card problem plz post what your sound card is and we will tell you how to get it working most likely there are drivers already compiled as a module for you kernel so it will be a simple operation
