new install mint 19 will not connect to internet wifi or wired

PROBLEM SOLVED here is how I did it: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspo...ltek.html#ID10

Hello all, I can not get online with my newly installed Mint 19. Yesterday I installed Mint on my old laptop successfully. I did so with a USB stick. I wiped the drive clean of windows 7 and made it a Mint machine. Today I partitioned the hard drive on my desktop for dual boot window 10 and Mint. Both OS's work but the Mint will not connect to either WiFi or Ethernet. I installed Mint on my Lenovo 310S ideacentre desktop with the same USB stick as with my laptop. What should I do now?

Does the OS (Mint 19) see the Wireless adapter?
Can you open a terminal and type in "sudo lspci -v", review the output and see if you can find wireless adapter.
If it is not there then you need to find drivers.

I will have to close windows on this desktop and open Mint first- dual boot. I know little to nothing about using the terminal window. My hope was that this distro was ready to go and not needing computer geek creds. Wrong again :)
When I installed Mint on my laptop the wifi was found right away. This allowed me to download the required software and drivers. After I send this reply I will sign off this puter and go to Mint to try and find what you suggest.

Thank you for the help.

Holy mackerel! That's a lot of info. It took me 8 attempts. Then I figured out that the L in lspci is lower case and that there's a space after the dash mark.
I see both a wireless network adapter and ethernet controller. I have tried to get online using both. Neither worked for me. Now what?

I'm looking at Network controller for wireless network adapter. It says I/O ports at e000 [disabled] [size=256]
Is this the problem? How do I enable it?

Ok, I do not use Mint, but here is what you can try:
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/03/27/ho...-installation/

I tried this on a machine running Ubuntu for another user, which worked:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...in-linux-mint/

May be more people will look if this thread is moved here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-mint-84/
But, I do not know how to move it there?

I will check out the links you provided. I will also post my question to the other place. This is very frustrating. It worked perfectly on my old laptop but this brand new desktop won't work. I keep thinking I did something wrong on the install. Should I attempt to re-install it? How do you do that?
Thanks again.

I opened a terminal window and entered inxi -Fz as instructed. Under Network it says N/A under driver for wireless network adapter. But the driver for the ethernet says- r8169 However neither one will function.

I would post a copy of the data the terminal window shows but how do I do that without an internet connection?

rokytnji 03-22-2019 07:41 PM

Code:

mintwifi
used to be a command I used along with inxi when I ran Mint.

Make a text file and put it on usb. Find another computer with internet access and ask polite like if you can copy and paste the contents of your text file in a post. Usually a brought cup of tea or coffee may help in assuaging the lenders feelings.

I have internet access via WiFi on my laptop. It is running Mint just fine. I'll try what you suggest. I have my desktop in dual boot mode. I am on windows as I write this. I have not tried to put something on a USB drive before, except Mint and that was automatic, sort of. I just finished checking the USB stick with Mint on it using Balena Etcher. It says that there is a problem with it. Perhaps I should just re-install Mint? Is that a good idea? But first I will try to make a text file.

Thank you for your help.

It says command not found when I entered mintwifi

Been a awhile since I ran Mint. Maybe they removed that command text file.
Also it may be a admin command, though usually terminal should mention are you sudo to run this command. Oh well.

Does this return anything?

With the wireless usb plugged in and Mint booted up?

Code:

dmesg | grep firmware
and

Code:

dmesg | grep less
I have had to jump from android phone, then do the text file to usb thing, then go to one of my other computers to post here. Usually to answer a quick question. It is not hard to do.

Make sure a cup of hot tea or coffee is around while you relax and calm down while you are lost in front of the screen. Don't take computer learning too serious. It should be fun. I just had ginger snap cookies with tea and honey while typing this out.

Happy Trails, Rok

On the mint usb question about re-install. If you did not md5sum check your Mint downloaded iso for file integrity first using windows or mint computer.

I suggest you do that first before any internet downloaded iso operating system install.

I only takes seconds and you learn something new in the process. You do this to ensure you got a good iso file.

I used Etcher to flash the Mint to USB and then I used to again to check for integrity. However, I checked it again yesterday and it showed a problem.
It is early here still, left coast time. I must get another USB stick so I can do the required stuff..
