Your single most important source of information is GOOGLE.

Enter the complete string of your second post in Google and start reading. Once you get stuck while installing feel free to come back and ask more questions.

You can download and install any free distribution of linux. Ubuntu Linux might be a good start for a novice. Regarding the documentation, at first check the official docs of the distribution of your choice, then look at:
http://www.tldp.org
http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz
Good luck!

To learn Linux I HIGHLY recommend that you use Linux exclusively. It took me about a year to be functional (ie get around my way) in Linux but I had to reinstall Linux many many times and went through a lot of pain. In the end, 10 years later it was well worth it.

Oh if your new to Linux ubuntu is a good choice but I would get ubuntu 10.04 LTS as 11x Ubuntu In my opinion isn't proven as stable and isn't so user friendly. Again that is my opinion.
