New DSL Install, reboot, now -bash Permission denied? Exhausted search efforts
Hello all,
Firstly, i'm NEW to Linux and my very first time with DSL. I'm installing this on an older Dell Latitude laptop.
I just finally got the DSL installed on my HDD successfully and then I added feh to start and run at start up, then I rebooted and now i'm getting this error:
No, directory, logging in with HOME=/ -bash: cd: /home/dsl: Permission denied
I have tried reading numerous websites but none explains to the level whereby I can understand. I even tried rebooting from the CD, but could not figure out how/what to do next!?
The question is, can someone explain how I can use the DSL CD to try to correct this error. More importantly, can you explain in layman terms so that I can actually put it good use. Thanks!!
*** Also, some additional questions I have....when you download a file where does it save to?? I still can't figure out that one.
Again, I tried researching all my questions but i'm still at a major impasse. I'm hoping someone can simply explain and possible list some steps to work this through and in the process be able to teach me.

sound's like you didn't create the user correctly. Please (if you can) get a cmd line and
cat /etc/passwd
ls -l /home

Hello Chris,
Thanks you soooo much for your quick response.
feh is a photo viewing/slideshow software.
I can get to cmd line only if I boot from the CD. When I try to boot from the HDD I can't get past that error message. I just get caught up in a never-ending cycle going no where. lol
What will these commands do:
cat /etc/passwd
ls -l /home
Thanks again.

Honestly I did not get completely what you did, but it appears that you have a user login problem. Since you can login as root you login as root into the box (not by the livecd. When error occurs do this:
Press Ctl+Alt+F2 {or F3,F4,F5,F6} until a Welcome to Linux login shell appears, there login as 'root', once logged in do this:
root@host-# adduser <Enter>
(here just follow the interaction: you must create a new user name, mostly press enter when it suggests to create a /home/yourname folder, as well as /bin/bash, just press enter if not sure of the answer.
When a valid user account is created the shell will report this so. If not then you will begin again by issuing 'adduser' command until account is created. Remember the password. Then reboot by pressing Ctl+Alt+Del. This time try to login in that newly created user name.
If problem persist then you must uninstall the DSL first then install it being logged in as root.

By the way it is usually saved at the /home/username folder, or /home/username/Desktop folder. But you can change this setting at the firefox browser: click Edit > Preference > Main > then at the Download tab you can Browse into the folder of your choice. After restarting Firefox your downloads shall go to that folder you specified.
Check back what issues.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

They will show information about the user's home directory that will help solve the problem.

Hello all, here's my update...
I tried all the above advice to no avail. I got a screen saying something like, xserv and asking me to adjust the screen size settings etc.? After a few attempts I decided to reinstall DSL again.
I have a new install but my mouse only work with the usb mouse and not the touchpad which worked the first time?? How can I get the touch pad to work again? I unplugged the usbmouse and rebooted to get the same result, no working touchpad?
It's a Dell Latitude CPi A-Series
Thus far i'm liking DSL.
Next, i've already downloaded feh(picture manager) & Unclutter, which i'll try to install and set to start-up when booted. Fingers crossed!
