new debian .iso download Q.

Have not yet installed debian amd64. No internet connection so I went with the big download. Had to install Bitorrent but everything went smoothly "except" I have some small files left over which Bitorrent would not accept. What are they for? One is MD5SUMS, SHA1SUMS, and some others. I recall the instructions saying some files were to verify a complete and accurate installation. Did I do it right? Can I install the OS now?

My goal is to create a Gateway server, I'm learning Linux on my own. Am an Electronics Technician and have built/repaired hundreds of computers but never investigated the bits & bytes part of things until now. I want to share and make the world a better and open place to be in.

Welcome to LQ!

You should use one of those files and check the integrity of your download, other than that, go ahead with install.

They are files to check the hashes so that you can verify you received the full download. You can just go ahead with the install, and if you run into any problems, come back to the forums :)

Make note of what version you have downloaded, ie bit in name before the .iso and go to the Debian website and track down the md5sum for that .iso, copy it to a file.

If you are using Windoze then you will have to find a secure (unvirused) site to download a GUI version of md5sum from, them run a check on that iso. Which to trust, the download or the md5sum checker?

Problem solved

Thanks to those that replied. The downloads were not complete even though it appeared, to me, that Bittorrent was finished. The problem was using Bittorrent which I normally would not use for anything.

The fix was to order the DVD set which will give me everything and verified. Since I have no IP service at home and use the public WiFi it made this solution to be the best one for me.
