NEW CD-ROM drive, can't mount it!!

Hello,

I've got SUSE 7.2 installed.

i've just swapped a useless 8x cd drive, for a not quite as useless ASUS 36x cd rom drive.

when I type:>

mount /media/cdrom

I get the following error:>

mount: /dev/cdrom is not a vaild block device

when I type:>

mount /dev/hdc

I get the following error:>

mount: can't find /dev/hdc in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab.

can anybody help?

Well, since you just made a physical change to your system, you should re-check your cable connections, master/slave jumper settings, etc.

Do:
ls -l /dev/cdrom
What device does the symlink point to?

less /etc/fstab
Is there an entry for /dev/hdc? Is the CD-ROM really the secondary IDE master (/dev/hdc)?

just got really pissed off and re-installed linux..

but many thanks for the reply DMR, there is some useful information in your comments that I will no doubt be referring to in the future!!!

Next time you'll make hardware change remember to turn on utility like kudzu. It will find new hardware and install it for you.
