I marked this solved in error, but I think I see a path forward and would like to thank Ztcoracat for the resources posted. I was trying to create a dual boot windowsXP and Ubuntu on a USED Dell Latitude, which I purchased in order to try Linux (I did not want to mess up or change in any way my MacBook Pro). The Dell's hard drive is suddenly wiped clean of all vestiges of Ubuntu AND my antivirus program. Don't know why. The computer now contains only its original installation of Windows XP and a version of OpenOffice. So it looks like try, try again for me and the Dell, but I want to be better informed before I do so. I guess I should do some READING first. Hopefully I will return to this forum a raging success. Thanks again.

If you still want to dual boot Win's XP with Ubuntu Linux you can.
You just need to shrink your Win's XP partition first; than install Ubuntu--
During the installation you will be prompted by a 'partition manager'
Make sure you write down your Win's partitions so you know what they look like when the Ubuntu partition manager shows you them so you don't change them. Use the free space to create your partitions for Ubuntu.

If that's hard to understand just right click on 'Control Panel"
Than right click on 'Disk Management' than shrink your Windows partition.
