networking windows XP and fedora core 4
 

I'm betting this question has been asked before but i searched the fourms and can up with nothing

i need to network my fedora box with my roomies XP boxes one is home the other is pro i don't know of a network set up utility i could use,

what can i do?

A broad question...what do you want to do by connecting those PC's? You would need Samba if you want Linux/Windows networking. Also look at www.linuxhomenetworking.com. One of best tutorial sites out there.

file sharing mostly also lan games too like quake3 and RTCW-ET

File sharing would absolutely need Samba. Don't know about games. Haven't played a game on Linux yet...not much of a gamer anyway :D

There is an excellent Samba tutorial on the LQ site. Trust me, if I can get Samba running in FC4 - you can too! :)

An ET LAN party doesn't require any special at all if you are all on the same network.. If one of them sets up a server, you'll be able to connect to it. If you set up the server, they'll be able to connect to you - no problem.

That realy did not make a whole lot of sence what i read he was useing a windows box to get files from his linux box i need to do the polor oposite of that

Samba is still a good idea. I find it difficult to imagine that you will never want to have the Windows machines map to a Linux share. But, your machine - your choice.

I notice that as the evening has worn on your responses have become ever more unintelligible and incoherent {You're from Canada and you can't spell polar??}. Perhaps the first step in solving the problem would be "Put down the beer!"

I read the how-to a few times. More things started making sense. I tried to follow, it failed %99 of the time untill i got it right.

This is the life of a newbie i guess but i finally got it right. I understand the how-to and i have a working fileshare
