networking redhat8.0

:newbie:
Greetngs

I have linux red hat 8.0 installed on one computer and windows 2000 on another and windows 98 on 2 others. I would like to know how to share files, like I do on Network Neighborhood from windows OS to Windows OS. I have a simple network connection they all connect to a hub and I use TCP/IP NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols. File And Printer Sharing and Client For Microsoft Network on my windows network. I use Workgroup And the name of my PC. I do not have domain name active. I need to know how I can share files with linux to windows just like I would be accessing another windows network I also need to know how to access files in windows from linux basically I need to know how to setup network on linux

www.samba.org - That's all you'll need basically to share files from Windows to Linux on a network.

You need to have the Samba (smb) server installed....if you haven't it can be installed with the Packages Manager under Servers > Windows Servers (or something like that). May ask you for one of the RH CDs. Then I suggest using LinNeighborhood as a GUI frontend for setting up the shares....well that's how I've done it, and it works a treat. Also, Linux can really only read from a NTFS partition, so I set-up some FAT32 partitions so I can shuttle stuff backwards and forwards. Check out http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html for more info.:)

Ok I tried looking at the web sites I even have a book but I just can't seem to grasp it.
I have a simple network on windows no domain.
(workgroup) = xxxx
(the name of my PC like) "my PC" then my name as I log into the computer this is what I use in windows how and where do I put these things like (computer name) (my name) and (workgroup) that if I do need to put them in. I have linux redhat 8 installed while the initial installation I installed samba. I read one book it says that the config file is in one place and I read in another it is somewhere else. I need to know how I can transfer files to and from windows using linux to and from linux using windows. I do not know any thing about linux I just bought a book about it and had another one for a while but without any one here to help me through it. It is hard!! so I need a step by step instruction. e.g. if I were to tell some one how to setup a network on windows I would say this " if you have the card installed then go to desktop look for [My Network Places] if its there go to right click it click properties a box will appear then go to [Local Area Connection] right click it click properties a box will appear................... you get the idea I need something like that where it comes from a idea that the reader has no idea what he is doing a walkthrough.

Thank you

You should really look in the Netwroking section of this forum. There are many threads that deal with Samba and you may find one that relates to your problem, or post a new one.
