Networking Mandrake 10.0 with XP
 

I just installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 for the first time. I am new to linux and no nothing. However, I have used Lindows and know enough to make my way around.

I am having a problem with networking my Windows XP Professional PC with my Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community Laptop. This is not a wireless connection it is just a regular Ethernet connection. I have Dial-Up and the network is really only for transferring of files.

I really do not know where to start, any ideas would be good ones.

Mandrake control center (configur my computer)>Network&Internet>Lan connection but then just follow the wizard and see what happens.

Oh, sorry, also you'll need to know a few of the answers about your connection.

I said mcc>net&I>Lan connection because my connection is a dsl one, but because I have a modem/router that interface to a PCI network card I just have to use the LAN connection facility and apply the internal IP address that I set in my modem/router. You may have different requirements for you connection i.e. you may be a normal ethernet connection, but I suspect that if you have a different connection type then you might have to dig around a bit i.e. does your connection use a static or dynamic IP address, if dynamic you may have to use dhcp, or you may have to play about with dial up etc etc.

But at least you're aware that you're gonna have to look in the mcc net&internet area.

I am very lost. I went through the wizard, answering as many questions as I knew. But afterwards I do not know what to do to browse the files.

I know with Windows I would just get into internet explorer and type //dell/ to access my computer named "dell" I tried that in mandrake and it just tried to take me to google. All I learned from the wizard was that mandrake has drivers for my ethernet card.

You'll find that the konqueror is both a file manager and a browser. I'm presuming that you've got a home icon on your desktop. Personally, I've pretty much cleared my desktop and put nearly everything on my taskbar.

But, if you click on the home icon, mine opens konqueror with file:/home/john but if I then clear the file/url line completely and type linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=160404ux it would send me here (that's providing that my connection is up of course, otherwise it tells me that the url isn't available).

Now with konqueror still open, if you cleared the line upto the file:/ it should offer you a drop down of the available directories to look through. Presuming that you're in your user account, if you try and look at something and it tells you that you can't that just means it's a root access file. To view that, you have to either log out and back in as root to view it graphically, or if you are sure of which file you want to look at, then you can open a terminal (konsole in kde), type su and press enter, then put you root password in, you'll then see the prompt change from $ to # with written indication that you are root.

You can then use an editor to look at the contents (and edit it if you want) - don't forget, that lot's of "proper" editors use typed access and control codes e.g. in a terminal as root, type vi /etc/fstab and that opens the /etc/fstab file in the VI editor and to go back to the normal terminal, you have to either quit using :q or if you changed something in the file, you have to save and quit with :wq (notice the : you will have to type that in).

There's a lot of editor's, mandrake's default is VI/VIM, which is a popular, lots of the "power users" like emacs, which may also have installed.

If it's just something that need's an editor to work on, and you're not sure, you can always right click on a file, then follow "open with", when the dialogue opens, follow more applications>editors> you're then offered a selection I usually use either kwrite or kate both of which just have to use the usual keyboard changes with the dropdowns at the top for open/close/save/save as etc etc.

Wow, after that mammoth explaination, I hope that's what you wanted to know.
