Networking devices, how to setup correctly

I am totally new to Linux, so bear with me...

I just finished installing JB Linux v 2.2 on a box I built. Previously an XP box, everything worked fine.

I went through the network set-up in the JB Linux setup menu, but I cannot connect to my router. The router should assign an IP, but the linux box still has the default loop back (127.0.0.1). Yes, I set it to dhcp.

What are the basic commands for setting up networking and IP?

Details:
JBLinux v2.2
also using KDE v2.1.2 (gui)

Never heard of JB Linux, is it based on some
other distro (so we can take better guesses
about how it might be set-up).

Cheers,
Tink

Pardon my newbie-isms, but I don't know quite frankly. The distro came from linuxiso.org.

I checked there and at the JB website which is www.jblinux.net. Neither site gives the origin if it was derived from another distro.

Would I be better off with a better know distro (as a newb)?

Not having seen it I must say I don't feel in the
position to say whether other distros might be
more suitable, but I must say that the information
provided on their web-site wouldn't entice ME
to try it (in other words, they don't say ANYTHING
about their distro - or at least I couldnt' find any-
thing I'd consider valuable information).

Cheers,
Tink
