networking basics
 

I'm a newbie to linux and have just installed Red Hat Enterprise 4.5 on a VM Server hosted by Windows XP. I'm now trying to ping/ftp from the XP host to the linux guest.

I can't seem to copy & paste from VM server so I'll have to type the info out.

On the LINUX side, eth0 is up with an IP if 192.168.0.131. I can ping this IP from Linux but not XP

On the XP side the IP Address is 192.168.0.158. I can ping this IP from the XP side but not the Linux side.

I chose NAT for the network as I can't get bridged to work (I think its because I've got a VPN installed on the XP machine)

The VMnet1 adapter has an IP address of 192.168.206.1 which I think may be the problem??

I think this IP may have come from a very old installation of VM Workstation, whcih I've uninstalled.

I think my problem is the Vmnet1 adapter is on a different subnet to the XP and Linux machines so they cant see each other?

Any help would be appreciated as I'm pretty much confused now !

Another question - I'm assuming that if I cant talk to the linux VW from my XP machine then I can't use things like SAMBA either.

All I really want to be able to do is to copy some software thats been downloaded onto the XP side, to the linux side.

That would most definitely be (at the very least) a part of the problem.

Unfortunately I'm not all that experienced with VM's but if you can give the adapter on the VM the same subnet as the 2 pc's that should fix the situation.

Not sure what VM you're using, but from what I understand with VirtualBox, using NAT will not place the guest on the same network as the host. For that, you'll need to configure it as TAP, which involves bridging.

Also, what are you trying to do, exactly? You said you're trying to transfer files between the host and the guest, but why?

I was tring to send files from he XP side to Linux as I've got a wireless connection and I can't connect to the internet from the linux side.

Anyway, I managed to solve it by setting the ip address on the linux side to have the same subnet as the VMnet8 adapter. Now I can talk either way through the adapter.

Just out of curiosity though, are you using a D-Link wireless card by any chance?

The reason I ask is that I had the same problem a while back (not connecting to the net I mean) and it was because -at the time- there were no drivers for the card in Linux. Don't know if that's still the case. My machine was a long way from the router though and so I tried to connect through with the wireless card. I mucked around with wrappers etc but just couldn't get it to work.
