network status monitor LXDE

im using lxde and i have this annoying issue. the icon on my panel shows an ethernet connection when i am not using one.

basically it only shows eth0 and lo as configurable options.

however, if i change eth0 to wlp3s0, it shows the connection and strength(which is what i want). Unfortunately this does not stay after a reboot.

I've also removed the ethernet connection, leaving only the wifi connection...and it still shows eth0

This may be because when i installed(arch) i had a hell of a time getting wifi as an option, probably because i hardwired for the install and didn't use wifi-menu to start off on wifi.

Anyone know what i can do to make this a static change?

pics attached.
