Network setup for opensuse?
 

Hi guys!

I just installed Opensuse 11.2 today and I'm eager to start downloading and customizing, but I can't set up a network.

I originally installed it with the GNOME desktop, and when I opened firefox i could only connect to google.com and ask.com, other websites timed out, even if i got to them via search results or URL.

Now, I reinstalled using the KDE desktop because after a little thought I preferred it, but now I can't even connect to these search engines at all. I don't know how to configure the network! It's through the onboard ethernet port, ethernet cable direct to modem.

Looks like a dns problem. What's in /etc/resolv.conf?
You can use the google name server, by adding:
as 1st nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf and see if it solves your problem

First...openSUSE 11.3 is out in 4 days. If it's a brand-new installation...consider just waiting a little bit, and getting the latest-and-greatest right out of the gate. :)

For network configuration, there's lots of variables. Are you using a home-router/switch? Direct from the DSL modem? Connected how, via wireless, or wired? What kind of hardware are you using??? Details are needed for any kind of decent help.

Basic instructions would be to get logged in, and run YAST. Logging in as root makes it a bit easier, since it won't prompt you for a password, but if you do log in as root....BE CAREFUL. Once you're in YAST, click on "Network Devices->Network Settings". It'll pop up a box, and list your devices. Click one, then configure it. If you're using a typical home switch, it's set to do DHCP, so follow the screens, and it should come up. The wiki on the openSUSE site has info on how to do this, with screen-shots.
