network problems ,new install fedorda 14
 

hi all,
I have installed fedora 14 on a spare computer for a home server using
Amahi ( it's the beta version).During the install i did something regarding the network config, what, i do not know,i have been trying to access the remainder of the Amahi setup but have no network. This was a week passed,i have read anything i can get on the network config and have tried plenty (still trying to figure /etc). I have tried some of the fixes descibed in these threads. When i do connect the ethernet cable to the router (which has a win 7 OS box already connected)i loose all internet connectivity from the rest of the house (2 wireless laptops & win7 box).
What am I doing wrong?

first i like fedora BUT I would NEVER put it on a home server ( nor even think of using a BETA version at that)

fedora is a "research and development " distro with a VERY VERY short life span .
A new version is released EVERY 6 months and support for any one version is only 13 months
SO unless you DO WANT do do a full and clean reinstall and REFORMAT( sometimes) of the server every 6 or 13 months( not fun) .Do not use fedora

I would install CentOS instead -- it has a 5 year lifespan

as for the router and its set up
is it using ipv4 or ipv4 and ipv6 ?

one thing fedora is good at is finding and setting the internet at install except for the ipv4 ONLY on old hardware

if this router IS OLD ( aprox. 4 to 5 years or older) then during the OS install, on the server, disable the ipv6 support

Thanks for your interesting reply,you can tell that i'm a newbie. I was looking for a free program for a home server and i read an article about Amahi and fedora 12 being a good choice.Then I saw that fedora 14 was available for an Amahi beta verson not the fedora14 sorry to mislead you. I have 2 laptops one with XP one with win7 and two desktops one running win7 the other a fairly recent gigabyte amd motherboard, 64amd x 2 core 5000+ cpu , 2 meg x 800 mhz memory plus 2 x 1tb samsung HDD and 1 500gb x segate drive.The router is a new Billion Bipac 7404VPNX and has its set up is it using ipv4 with ipv6 set to ignore at this time. I had know idea about fedora itself. CentOS is new to me also,but you suggest its a good option??

CentOS is the FREE version of RHEL( red hat) , and is community supported
it is designed for use as a server

it also looks like everything in Amahi is already in most linux installs by default

fedora 12 is at End Of Life and will never get any more security updates
so the beta is using 14

well if you want to reinstall this prepackaged bundle every 13 months and skip a version of fedora inbetween


what is it exactly you want to do with the home server ( it's main use)
to run as a media center ?
storage ?
general purpose ?

Hi John VV,
The main use for the server is to backup OS's,store digital photo's,video and print server. I now have a copy centOS 5.5 live ISO so we will see how that fits. I must admit that Linux retriving and installing apps is a bit daunting for me. Windows seems so easy for this. Great site you have.
