Network problem

Hi Everyone,

Using Ubuntu and having problem with my network.

I have a Netcomm NB5580W ADSL modem/ethernet switch device.

When I boot my computer up, one of the LAN lights illuminates on the ethernet switch. Linux begins to boot then before the login screen appears, the LAN light extinguishes.

If I shut down computer down, the ethernet port light comes back on.

So now I am wondering what step of the boot up process is causing the network to stop working.

Looks like some sort of network problem, what commands can be used to gather clues?

Additionally I noticed that the link light on the RJ45 connector on the rear of the PC also extinguishes when Linux boots up, and the data light flashes in a pattern. The flashing is not fast like it normally is when there is data traffic.

When I shut down the PC, the link light returns to normal (on) and the data traffic light extinguishes.
