New user to Linux/Kanotix64

Installed Kanotix (see pfschim - SATA PATA dual boot finally works for system details). I have fixed my screen res issue (thanks Kano) and discovered how to successfully edit GRUB menu.lst to suit my dual boot needs, at least as the system stands now.

Some follow-on questions:

PRINTING:
I have an HP PSC2510 attached on the local LAN 10/100 Ethernet (wired, not wireless). Works great in WinXP. I cannot seem to get it to really install in Kanotix. I tried to use the Configure Printer module with no success. I know it's at 192.168.1.105, but I can't make any headway. I looked at LinuxPrinter.org and it is listed as a good printer with all functions supported (including network printing). Went to the HP open source site and downloaded the "driver" file indicated for the device. The problems start from the very beginning of the instructions. It gives very precise terminal command directions for install, but when I try the first command string $ cd .. something re directory and file name (asking me to find where the file/driver is located .. I get "no such directory or file .. blah blah blah ... frustrating to not even be able to get simple command line stuff to run ... so any ideas please ? If I can't get basic printing to work, Kanotix will not be a working system for me.

SAVING APP CHANGES:

I am using XMMS and KMix to plau tunes on my Audigy sound card. I found the Switches menu and turned on Audigy Digital and all was well. Then I pointed XMMS to my .mp3 files on the mounted /dev/hda1 and go all my mp3's and playlists qued up. But when I log off and reboot later, all these changes must be made again to play music.
Question... how do I get XMMS and KMix to save the config changes I make. OR any app for that matter.

I would like to try and install another distro like FC3 64, or Mandrake. Can anyone offer me guidane on partitioning please. As can be seen , I have quite a bit of space on Disk /dev/sda. I have used QTParted to create the original swap and ext2 partitions for the Kanotix install. I just don't want to mess with GRUB now that I have this working finally. Suggestions please.

ADDING EXTERNAL USB HD
I have been using a WD 80gb USB external HS for backing up certain data for my own system as well as the other 5 systems on my home network. Following a suggestion somewhere back about 3 weeks ago, I pulled the plug on the USB HD and was finally able to get Linux (Kanotix 64) to install. Now I would like to add it back to the system. When I try to add before boot, I am back at GRUB error 22. When I wait until after booting and plug it in, it pops right up on the desktop as usb sdd1. How do I set this up so that I do not have to keep unplugging the USB HD just to boot. Any ideas or suggestions ?

If this is a network printer (as you seem to indicate), you should
be able to use IPP printing protocol on port 9100 (i think)

XMMS:
Do you mean application setings or playlist managemnt?
For playlist management, open the playlist management and load/save playlist
(bottom right hand side of window)
If you mean application settings double check your file permissions for the config files.

I suggest you split your questions up into separate threads ;)

UberNUT69 - Thanks for the printer info ... port 9100, I'll give that a try today.

The XMMS KMix situation has to do with making application changes .. i.e. I have to activate Audigy Digital Output and turn off ICH in the switches tab of KMix so I can use the SPDIF output on the Audigy. But each time I log off and then reboot into Linux/Kanotix, I have to make the switch changes all over again. With the playlist, I have to go over to the ntfs volume where the mp3's are and point XMMS at the WinXP My Music folder. I have not tried making a playlist in XMMS once I open the mp3 folder. Maybe that will do the trick. I'll also give that a try today.

Sorry for the long post, its just that these are the issues that I am trying to address and, as I mentioned, there are few enough places to get answers. I'll keep it in mind though.

I dont use Kmix myself, nor spdif, so I cant really tell ...
however I'm sure that there are some mixers (aumix?) that save their settings during shutdown
and restore them at reboot.
I wouldn't be surprised if kmix had a similar ability.
eg. a .kmix file? :)


Now let me get this right, you DONT want to boot from your USB drive now?
Just go into BIOS and make sure USB isnt in the boot order.
(That might do the trick)
