Network Issue
 

Ok, so I have SuSE 8.0 up and running and everytime I start I have to go into the config and re-enable eth0. Is this a common issue?

Second, I'm looking all over for info on SAMBA but I'm unable to get Linux to see the XP machine. Is there an easier way to use SAMBA? What is SWAT?

U can do a google search on samba howto: for info to help you, Swat is a gui interface to help u configure samba its ok but I prefer to edit the smb config file with an editor (ie. emacs,Vi)

I haven't used SuSE, but in Redhat and Mandrake there two lines in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file that can effect this:
"ONBOOT=" <-- set to yes
and
"BOOTPROTO=" <-- the protocol- set to "dhcp", "bootp", or "none" for a static IP


Can the machines see each other at all (e.g.: can they ping each other?)

Well it wasn't in the scripts directory but it was right in the network directory. Looks like everything is set though. Even still, I am learning more and more where everything is kept. Thank you to everyone who is helping with this.

I am able to ping the machines. I have them both running through a Netgear router for the moment. Before I upgraded from 7.1 to 8.0 I had eth1 set to be a DHCP server and eth0 as the gateway. I think it is on my XP machine that I have to make changes and not the SuSE side. Going to try that tonight.

I checked some sites and even went through the man pages for SuSe and something I found is that SWAT is not located in the /usr/local directory at all. The samba folder doesn't hold it either. Think I am going to have to call in someone who knows SuSE to show me the path to destruction.

I, too have recently upgraded to SuSE 8.0. I was suprised to find that some things you might use (like MAKE) are not installed by default.

Go onto the Yast2 configuration menu and look for the option to install packages. With a little patience you should find SWAT there--I know I saw it in my searches for other things.

SWAT, by the way, is a utility to configure SAMBA.

after going through all of the install files I still couldn't find it. It did show samba as installed. I'll keep looking though. Thanks
