network interfaces keep resetting

hi,
I guess I messed around with my network settings recently, because now the internet doesn't connect automatically.
I use adsl that I set up using pppoeconfig. The network was set up during my debian installation.
Now I get no interfaces when I do ifconfig from root and I have to do
ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.255.0.0 up and run pon every time I boot my pc.
And boot time I also get a message saying /etc/network/interfaces is not readable. This file however exists.
What do I do know??
Also, pppconf doesn't have anything to do with adsl, right?

have you changed the permissions on /etc/network/interfaces??

also using ifconfig only configs the interfaces until they are either deconfigured, or the networking is stopped (usually via a reboot/powerdown).

If you want these settings to be permanent, you must enter them in /etc/network/interfaces and define the IP address / netmask etc.
