network help for newbie w/router

How do I file and printer share in this senario.

Suse 10 box 1
Win 98 box 2
Test box 3

what do I need to have installed/running on the suse machine? You don't have to have anything with SMB do you? since this won't be a server.

If you just want to get files from the Windows box, you need samba-client installed.
You might want to look into a nice GUI called smb4k.

If you want to share files from the Linux box, you need samba installed.
That is configured in /etc/samba/smb.conf

What about having a workgroup and all that crap with windows? or is that in the client?

Well cjae, all I wanted to do was network a win98 laptop to my main linux desktop (all plugged through a hub etc), but it's turned into a monumental PITA!

Why?

cos it appears that theres no straight forward howtos's that I can find that actually work or might be even vaguely relevant to my attempts.

yes I seem to have got it connected, i.e. I can see the files etc on the laptop, but only if I put the IP address into konqueror, otherwise zip/nada etc etc.

theres a mountain of info out there, but all the stuff I've read tends to bombard you with a deluge of unnecessary additional info that you probably don't need.

sure, I know that I've probably got parts of my smb.conf wrong, as well as some of the settings for the laptop (and possibly the linux desktop as well), but for the life of me I can't work out what the errors might be!

People have tried to be helpful, but with info like this to try and understand, well it couldn't be much further over my head if it tried!

I understand that it may be possible for me to use IPP just to get the laptop printing to the inkjet thats paralleled to the linux desktop, but again thats also very over my head (Whoooooooooooooooosh!).

So if you manage to get any good, straight forward, easily understood (from the novice POV) I'll watch the thread!

Good luck, because thus far, as far as I'm concerned, samba etc has proven to be a very large pile of incomprehensible pooh!

regards

John

p.s. and no, smb4k doesn't seem to want to work without samba, samba-client, smb4k etc - theres also webmin, but the docs for that seem to just as equally cryptic. Theres also a utility called SWAT - sometimes it's installed as part of samba, some distros seem to have it seperately. If you did install that to give it a try, you would normally get to it via a browser (http://localhost:901) - again, it's only any good if you have the faintest idea of which parts/selections/choices that need to be made to make "it" work!
