Network file sharing

OK I am new to this so please give me an answer that is detailed.
I recently setup Mandrake 9.2 64 bit on my rig. Here is my delemma, I can access the internet through a windows server gateway with downloads speeds around 300Kbps but when I transfer from the server to my main rig( such as audio files) They only transfer @ 30Kps at best and this is across a GB LAN. Can some one please give me some direction. I think it has to do with Samba but I am not sure.

Egad, man! Why would you use that other OS between such a sweet piece of hardware and the WWW?

It is not unusual to have transfer rates a factor of two or three lower going through that other OS. It is just not designed for networking. A factor of ten as you see probably means there is another misconfiguration problem, like the other box being set for 10 base T, perhaps. The EU has found that other OS discriminates against other browsers, too. If you fake out your browser to be IE whatever, is there an improvement? If only SMB transfers are affected, I would avoid the SMB transfers and use Linux on your gateway. You may have a bad cable or NIC. Look at ifconfig output to see errors. Use mii-tool to check speed settings.

The other box is not the problem, it networks fine with 3 other boxes and with this one when running "that other OS". All hardware is OK. SMB transfers are the only ones affected as I can browse the web with mandrake running and using any linux browser and download just fine so the throughput of that machine is flawless. The only time there is a problem is when making any type of file transfer from any machine on the network to this one when I am running Mandrake. All other machines work great running "that other OS". Being new to linux I cant even think about using it for my gateway as I cant get it to run right on my FX51 rig. Maybe it is a problem with the release for 64bit platforms?

OK an update. I went into the confiure system console and did a reconfig on my network settings. I mounted other sources in the network and can access other win machines just fine with transfer rates over 5MB/s but my server still has the same issues. go figure
